It's been awhile so here is a brief resume of recent birding activity since I last posted in May!
June 6th to the 30th: A wonderful trip to Alaska for a two week RV tour followed by a weeks cruise down the Inner Passage to Vancouver, a combination of birding, walking and sea watching. It was a truly wonderful trip benefiting from excellent weather and quiet roads and campsites.

September 10 to 18th: Walking the way of St Francis: Umbria. Another Inntravel walk this time in Italy. The walk followed part of the Way of St Francis starting in Assisi and ending in Spoleto a total of four days walking covering 84 miles approx.
We spent a couple of days in Assisi at the start and enjoyed exploring this wonderful and historic city. The walks were challenging due to the heat with temperatures reaching 29 degrees C. A couple of the walks had long sections of road walking at the end of the day so when combined with the heat made them a bit of a drag.
Birding was not brilliant and I actually ended up not carrying my binoculars as it seemed pointless. Italy doesn't seem to have the pull of say Spain. I feel that I'm doing it an injustice but looking over my lists for Italy I don't seem to see the range and variety of Spain.

26th September: Return to Burwell Fen after a long period of not visiting. I'm not sure what is happening with this area as it seems to have gone right of the boil. This visit produced very little of interest. I can only hope that this improves over during the autumn and winter. Given time this winter I plan to look back over my sightings throughout the years of visiting to see if there is a trend downwards or is it just a case of familiarity brings contempt.

1st October: Called in at Cavendish Heath (Suffolk) on the way home from Bury St Edmunds. Good numbers of Stone Curlew (12) were still present and showing well.

2nd October: Had to pop back to work to pick up some stuff I left there on Tuesday. I decided to take Annie and walk the bank on the far side of the reserve at Welney Village. It's always good to see the reserve from a different location and angle.
Good numbers of Cetti's Warbler were vocal along what would be the summer walk. Even from this far away you could see the Cattle Egret working their way through the mud that the digger was dragging out near Friend's Hide.
