Birdwatching in Alaska

 June 7th to 29th

This was our second visit to Alaska, the first being a cruise in 2018 up the Inner Passage. This time we were to spend two weeks touring in an RV followed by a repeat cruise back down to Vancouver.

Being able to do our own thing allowed us to stop whenever and to take our time enjoying the spectacular countryside and its wildlife. Throughout the trip I recorded 82 species with 34 being lifers. These lifers included American Dipper seen at Williwaw Campsite.

As we were leaving Homer  Debbie spotted two 'tall birds'. A quick stop and a scan from the van produced Sandhill Crane feeding close to the road. I made my way back to take photos and get a closer look.

The first day of the cruise across Prince Williams Sound produces a couple of Black-footed Albatross. Sadly it was early in the morning and rather grey resulting in poor photos but that's the way of things!

In terms of other wildlife we had Moose and a single Black Bear! Humpback Whale, Sea Otters and Stellar Sea Lions were all recorded while cruising.

Highlights of the trip were the vast number of Bald Eagles spotted and after many years since Iceland, male Harlequin Duck.
