Week commencing 3rd September

Monday 3rd

Return to Burwell Fen after a few weeks of being away and then recovering from jet lag and a trip to Liverpool! Picked the dogs up from kennels and headed to Cock Up Bridge to walk the lower part of the fen. A really nice warm morning with very little wind and very little to see!

A few Swallow around the bridge and the usual small flocks of Goldfinch. Most of the fen is now dry with just the pools by the cycle path holding water. On the large pool were three Cormorant, thirteen Coot, two Lapwing and a single Little Grebe.

The next pool along held a single Green Sandpiper and the final pool a Grey Heron and a single Snipe. The pool by the bridge only offered Woodpigeon.

Crossing from bridge to barn I spotted a single female Kestrel and at the pool behind the barn were Pied Wagtail and a single Yellow Wagtail.

Of the summer visitors, other than the swallows,  a single Whitethroat by the Upware Bridge and a Reed Warbler by Cock-Up Bridge.

Let's hope the autumn brings a few more.

Tuesday 4th

Walked the local patch this morning with nothing to report!

Thursday 6th

A nice, warm morning so off to Baker's Fen and to walk up Harrison's Drove. A couple of Whitethroat present and good numbers of calling Cetti's Warbler. Throughout groups of young Swallow were moving through, one group giving a Hobby a bad time!

A Buzzard was by the new hide and a Little Egret and Little Grebe were the only birds on or around the once flooded area.

Plenty of berries on the trees so hopefully we should see plenty of winter visitors!

Harrison's Drove, Baker's Fen
Met the Professor on the way back and caught up with bits and pieces. Both of us are puzzling over the vanishing of the Marsh Harriers, having not seen on since mid August. Has the drying of the land driven them off? Usually I would be seeing a good few young harriers around but nothing!

The Prof kindly pointed out a Little Owl by the barn. It seems this one has been around for a few weeks so will have to keep an eye open.

Friday 7th

Down to the railway sidings and along the river this morning. A lovely sunny day with a hint of autumn in its coolness.

A male Blackcap feeding in the elder-flower berries and three Chiffchaff calling in competition. A nice party of Long-tailed Tit with a few Blue Tit mixed in were passing through the trees. Five Swallow were feeding over the bushes.

10 species recorded

Welney this afternoon to discuss voluntary work with the warden. I'm joining the maintenance team working on Fridays. While there took the opportunity for a brief scan of the reserve. A single Avocet was on the main pool, the rest having departed. Plenty of Teal and Mallard present and five female Wigeon were feeding at the back of the main pool on the grass. The injured Whooper Swan pair have had seven cygnets. A female Marsh Harrier was present.

Saturday 8th
A couple of Jay were moving through the trees along the railway sidings. Haven't seen any here since January.
