Week commencing 29th December 2025

Tuesday 30th

Day spent at work checking hides and going through the paperwork for the forthcoming nesting season.
Six Barnacle Goose landed on the water in front of the main hide. Cattle Egret were present along the banks and large numbers of Whooper Swan were on the fields in the area.

Wednesday 31st
A wonderful morning, cold with ice on the water but still and clear so up and out to Burwell Fen along with the rising sun. As I was driving across Tubney Fen a single Cattle Egret flew from the ditch and it was great to see a small covey of Grey Partridge by the side of the road. It has been a while since I saw any in this area so I was pleased to see them. There was also a small flock of Whooper Swan (18) including one juvenile feeding in the fields.

Had an amazing experience as I was crossing the bridge. A large flock of Goldfinch flew directly towards me passing within inches! Not sure whether they didn't see me against the rising sun or what but it was an experience that I've never had before.

Nothing on the bottom pool as we went out but two Snipe on the return. Plenty of Reed Bunting flitting through the reeds. The Pout's Hall pool held a good number of Gadwall (161) and Shoveler (71). Amongst these and a few Teal and Wigeon was one Shelduck and a pair of Pintail. A group of four Whooper Swan flew over, these were not from the Tubney Fen group.
