Thursday 8th January 2026

A cold and grey morning with temperatures down to 1 degree and complete cloud cover. It was very quiet out at Burwell Fen with very few people about.

The pools at the lower end of the fen where still frozen and there was nothing on them. Walking the bank towards Pout's Hall a fairly steady stream of Fieldfare and Goldfinch were moving around.

The main flooded area was also also frozen and nothing was around. The Pout's Hall lake too was frozen but as we approached I could hear the crack of ice and the rustle of reeds. On getting closure a Bittern flew out just feet away and flew across the lake toland in the far reeds.

A group of five Whooper Swan passed over. As I was driving out I spotted a large flock in the distant fields near Wicken.
